The new 2017 Kia Optima is set to undergo several refreshments for the new model year, even after last year’s redesign that brought about features such as a new exterior and interior design layout, a myriad of technologies, and some performance tweaks. Prototypes of what appears to be the new Kia Optima have been spotted undergoing testing in Europe, and even with the heavy camouflage, it is quite apparent that the new Optima is set to get several upgrades.
In the meantime, Kia has already unveiled both the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid and Optima Plug-In Hybrid, with both their release dates and price estimates now public. Continue reading to know the details.
The Road That Brought KIA So Far
Granted, the midsize sedan segment is home to tons of sedans so re-known that they need no introduction. Fusion. Camry. Accord. The list is endless especially when you factor the least known brands. KIA has recently become a serious contender in this competitive market despite being in the scene for over fifteen years. Just like the model it replaces, the 2017 model aims to further elevate the brand’s nameplate a notch higher.
The model is an excellent choice for buyers looking for a fresh alternative to an otherwise staid segment and represents Kia’s brand’s maturation through obsessive attention and continuous refinement to details. It is expected to continue being KIA’s top-selling vehicle.
Better Or Worse?
The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid was unveiled during the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. It enjoys the same design – inside and out – as the all-new 4th generation, gas-powered Optima Sedan. Relative to the outgoing model, the new model aims to up the ante by offering a premium driving experience, better fuel economy (10% improvement), and modern styling.
Slightly Better Economy?
The Kia Optima Hybrid 2017 gets a new powertrain that targets a 10% increase in fuel economy. According to Kia, a new compact and efficient 2.0L GDI four-cylinder comes coupled with a 38kW electric motor to generate a combined output of around 193 horsepower @6,000 rpm.
Another release from Kia for 2017 is the Optima Plug-In Hybrid, also unveiled during the Chicago Auto Show 2016. New features and technologies are now available for the Kia Optima PHEV, including a more robust, smarter infotainment system, a more powerful hybrid engine, greater interior refinement, and new exterior design enhancements.
The midsize sedan segment is not that rich when it comes to the competition. The 2017 Honda Accord features powertrain excellence, a bold new styling, and thorough refreshments. The 2017 Mazda 6, although lacking a powerful engine, is fun to drive and stylish. The 2017 Hyundai Sonata and the 2016 Toyota Camry are other solid choices shoppers should also check out.
Do We Know The Release Date And Price For The New 2017 KIA Optima?
The release date has been set for early 2017, at least to latest info reaching our news desk. As for the price, here’re the figures: Kia Optima Sedan – $23,000, Kia Optima Hybrid – $27,000, and the Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid – $35,000. The pricing info is just a speculation, as Kia is yet to make the exact details known.
2017 Kia Optima Exterior Details Are Blurred Until The Release
Judging from the images and spy photos we have of the KIA Optima Sedan, we think it’d be wise to say the new model has made a confident leap forward in terms of freshness and modern designs. The exterior design is a testament to how far Kia has come as a brand, and how far it aims to go.
The Kia Optima’s exterior is boldly designed to be sporty and functional with exterior dimensions that remain unaltered over the existing model. But because of the heavy camouflage, much of the exterior will remain a mystery until KIA decides to unmask the prototype, probably sometime closer to its release date.
2017 KIA Optima Interior Also Known As A Mistery
The interior of the sedan, too, remain a mystery. The new Optima Hybrid, however, delivers a host of convenience features and comprehensive driver-assistance systems. Its cabin is more comfortable and larger than before. Doors and dash feature real stitching, while soft-touch materials are available for the model-specific instrument panel gauges.
Available Trims Are Unchanged
The sedan is available in four trims just like before – Optima EX, SX, SXL, and LX. The Optima Plug-In Hybrid is only available in EX trim model, while the Optima Hybrid is available in LX and EX rims.
Much of what the sedan comes with under the hood is still a mystery. However, we expect the powerful turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that powered the Optima SX and SXL to return.
KIA has already confirmed the available safety technologies for the Optima Hybrid. They include a Blind Spot Monitor, Front Collision Monitor, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Advanced Smart Cruise Control. Crash impact safety assessment is ongoing – details will be offered later.
