Spy photos of what appears to be the all-new 2017 Mazda 2 have resurfaced. It is heavily disguised and only partial parts of the headlights, foglights, taillights, and grille can be seen. It’s been two years now since we last had a thorough Mazda 2 redesign, and going by the current market dynamics, it is only natural to imagine that Mazda gave it substantial facelifts. Indeed, those in the know say the new model has been amped up to resonate well with the rest of the vehicles in the rival camp. Release date rumors suggest it’ll go for sale sometime in the latter half of 2017.
To Update Or Not To Update?
Having to improve something considered good already is a challenge. Well, Mazda seems to have mastered this judging by the enhancements the new model is slated to feature. Subcompacts have really captured the attention of most brands thanks to their versatility, fuel efficiency, maneuverability in tight spaces, and ample interior room in spite of their compactness. If the aforementioned features are the basis that qualify a subcompact car, then it’d be fair to say that the new 2017 Mazda 2 is set to blow away people’s expectations.
Lighter, Safer And Silent?
Rumors allege it has lost considerable weight over its predecessor. This has been achieved by the relentless pursuit of shedding of unnecessary grams off of it. In doing so, Mazda enhanced collision safety with the help of also a stiffer chassis and body. Cabin noise and emissions have also greatly improved. What however remains to be seen is what lurks beneath the bonnet. It is unlikely Mazda will carry-over the same mills offered for the outgoing models unchanged. This doesn’t mean however that it is improbable.
In case the latter holds water, then we expect the SkyActiv 1.5L, diesel, a petrol SkyActive-G 1.3L/1.5L, and a 2.0L SkyActiv-G engine. The 1.5L SkyActive-D diesel engine should be able to crank out 103 horsepower @4,000 rpm, and 184 pounds-feet of torque @1,500 – 2,500 rpm. The exterior and cabin are extraordinarily attractive thanks to the KODO – Soul of Motion exterior design.

Even with a heavy disguise evidenced by the pictures, it is quite apparent that the new model comes with some interesting looks. Mazda is well-known for its award-wining designs mirrored in the muscular lines, solid stance, rear-leaning cabin, and overall design the Mazda 2 is offered with.
Some of the areas we should expect Mazda to make facelifts on include the color palette, grille, LED headlights’ cluster arrangement, and aerodynamic cues. Redesigns that’ll make the Mazda 2 look fresh and lively.
2017 Mazda 2 Interior Spy Pictures Show Very Little
As the images show, there’s nothing much to show about the interior as everything is heavily camouflaged from the outside. What we however know is the fact that the new model’s interior offers an excellent symbiotic relationship of the following elements – ergonomics, craftsmanship, and comfort.
No trim has been announced yet.
Under the hood should be several engines on offer. However, only one is known as the rest are yet to be confirmed by Mazda if they’ll be offered or not. The engine in question is the 1.5L SKYACTIVE-D diesel engine offering 103 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque.
